For new manager Alex Pantoleon, there are some big shoes to fill as he takes over for his prolific and prodigious father.
"I grew up in restaurants - I was the little kid running around while dad was hard at work, manning the range in the kitchen, ordering food, checking on guests. It wasn't long before I was learning how it all worked" said Alex. "My dad worked as many as 20 hours a day to build this business. I am following in his footsteps - but I definitely want to find a different balance for my life."
Making a restaurant work is hard business. But, for the last 19 years, Mykonos has been serving some of the most well reviewed food in the area. Scoring 4.1 out of 5 on Google Reviews, 4 of 5 stars on Tripadvisor, 4 of 5 on Yelp, 4.5 of 5 stars from Facebook users, most people walk away impressed.
"Our 'Go to Greek place" in Bellingham" leads one review, "Good to go" heads another, and Yelper Rebecca R. raved "AMAZING FOOD! After spending a couple weeks in Greece last year, I have been looking for a place that can come close to my experience. The portions are great, the service is friendly, and the prices aren't bad!"
"My favorite thing about being a restaurateur has to be the people" Alex reflected, "this industry is all about relationships, going the extra mile for your customers, and as the manager, being ready and willing to do every job in the restaurant. It can get hectic, but seeing people who love the place come back time after time - that's a good feeling."
Alex explains that he's always on a quest to "find what is fresh" and has long standing relationships with many local food producers and processors such as Barleans Fishery, and Claus Meats in Bellingham, and specialty baker Angel Foods Bakery in Vancouver, BC, who provides the pita bread. "Food standards are much higher in Canada, and that pita bread is something special that our customers absolutely love" Alex said.
"What's something that everyone should try here at Mykonos?" Alex ponders when asked "everything here is pretty good, but my go to is the Artichoke Chicken."
